CHAPTER 14
In the days that followed, the waiting room at the clinic was backed up with appointments. Annie didn’t know why business picked up the way it did—word of mouth, she supposed—but she was glad for it. And if it surprised her that some of her clients were coming from other towns that had veterinary practices, she didn’t question it. She welcomed the extra income, especially considering that Jimmy, like most twelve-year-old boys, wanted things like expensive sneakers and video games. Remembering his upbringing, when he was lucky to have a clean t-shirt to wear, she happily gave him the things he wanted, making it easier for him to fit in among other boys his age. In a few weeks he’d be going back to school, and she was hopeful that this school year would be better than the last when she’d been called to the principal’s office several times to discuss his behavior. Jimmy still exhibited signs of belligerence, but they were fewer and not as intense. And Pooch, although still wary of strangers, had reached the point of trusting her and Jimmy enough so that he no longer bared his teeth at them.
The only thing about which Annie was not too optimistic was Nick.
She had returned home the night of the fireworks display, lips red from his kisses, body reeling with the aftershocks of their lovemaking. She knew she should forget about it. It wasn’t supposed to happen. And she wasn’t supposed to want it to happen. It was nothing more than the desperate coupling of two lonely and confused people. But how could she forget the dizzying desire she felt for him or the hard, driving possession that filled her empty, aching need? By day, she administered rabies shots, treated cuts and bruises, put splints on broken legs, and finally spayed Miss Kitty. It was easy to lose herself in her work caring for the animals. But nights, like this one, were different.
She lay in bed with the cover thrown back. It wasn’t the heat of the summer night making her uncomfortable. It was the heat from within, the surge of warmth accompanying the thought of him. If her body did not still ache from the fury of their lovemaking, she might have thought it all a dream. Alone in the dark, she longed for the strength of his muscles holding her prisoner against his savagely beating heart. Unable to sleep, she rolled to her back and stared at the ceiling. How was it possible, she wondered, to feel so connected to him one moment and so shut out the next? She’d felt the old walls come up around him when he had gotten out of bed and walked naked to the window. For many long minutes he’d been silent as he stared out on the starlit night. During their lovemaking she had familiarized herself with every inch of his body, and yet seeing him like that—the broad shoulders, the slim flanks, the hard, lean buttocks—had stunned her then as the memory did now.
